This small paradise is located in Avolsheim and features breath-taking views of all the surrounding vineyards. Saint Materne is the patron saint of the village. The plot, only 0.45 ha, is located at the top of the hill, at 360m altitude, in a slight hollow, sheltered from the wind. The terroir is naturally delimited by a cliff on one side and on the other a long stone pile (steinrossel). It is a particularly demanding, shallow limestone soil: 20 cm in depth exposing bare rock everywhere.

The yields are low in the order of 35hl/ha and thus produce a small cuvee of some 2000 bottles.

This place produces a wine with a very particular bouquet! This grape variety typically matures very early, with a high sugar content in grapes and is relatively low in acidity. On the Clos Saint Materne, an unfavourable aspect is compensated by the limestone, which gently yields the heat stored, while preserving a nice acidity, which is key to the success of this grape variety!

The tasters of the Gilbert et Gaillard Guide defined the character of this wine very well: Score: 87/100 in the Gilbert et Gaillard 2014 Guide
"Clear golden colour, with green hints. Nose marked by the terroir, elegant smoky notes with hints of yellow peach. The attack reveals a generous wine, round, fleshy, concentrated on the palate, where the fruit and mineral combination is enhanced by fine spicy hints. A wine with an excellent personal touch." (Comments in the G&G Guide)
